Overview

Etymon gives you two ways to create new words. First, you can handcraft words by specifying unique combinations of vowels and consonants. This is called your Word Recipe. To specify a vowel, enter a @. To specify a consonant, enter a $. Or you can enter a * for all consonants EXCEPT q,x,y and z (because sometimes those consonants look weird in words). Etymon will insert a random vowel every place you asked for a vowel and random consonants every place you want a consonant.

So, for example, try tapping the Handcraft tab and enter something like @$@$@*@ and then tap the Create Words! button and see what words you have just created. Get ready to chuckle at some of the combinations and say "Wow!" for others. You can also include key phrases to add special meaning to the words you create. See Handcraft Examples below for more ideas and ways to create your own unique words.

The other way to create new words is to start with a concept or idea that you already have in mind. If you tap the Concept tab you can enter your concept and then select from several handy options to create fascinating new words.

  • If you enter a concept and then tap the Basic button, Etymon will slice your concept into its syllables and then augment those syllables with various vowel and consonant combinations to create your words.
  • If you tap the Synonym button, Etymon will look up words similar to your concept, break those similar words into their syllables and then add vowels and consonants in various patterns to create new words.
  • Finally, if you tap the French, Spanish or Latin buttons, Etymon will find a translation for your concept and then again, give you fascinating words based on the translation and added vowels and consonants.

See Concept Examples below for more information, then try different concepts and options and be ready to be amazed at the words you can create.
